Pokemon go is a cultural moment. It’s one of the biggest Pokemon video games of all time and it’s available on iOS and Android. If you’re just starting I have some beginner Pokemon go tips just for you. And if you’re really obsessed with the game already I’ve got the advanced tips and tricks to be the very best and I’ll help you conquer the gyms.
So let’s go…
How To Play Pokemon Go
First, you’ll have three Pokemon and choose from at the very beginning Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur who is the best. But if you really want to pick Pikachu you can. Simply walk away from your three options four times. For the fourth time, Pikachu will appear, you’ll toss a Pokeball at it and you’ll have it in your collection.
How to toss the Pokeball you might ask?
Well, it’s quite simple. Put your finger on the ball flick it forward. There are more advanced techniques and we’ll get to those later.
Catching A Pokemon Guide
In Pokemon go the latest patch of 1.3.0 or 0.33.0 depending on the device. Niantic has begun testing a variation of the nearby Pokemon feature with users in certain areas. If you are one of those lucky users, it might seem confusing at first but here’s how it works.
The Tracking System
The new tracker system currently has two features, “Sightings” and “Nearby”. The tracking button the bottom-left may display either sighted, nearby, or combination of both.
Should you happen to be near Pokestops you’ll begin seeing the nearby Pokemon that showed the Pokemon next to a picture from a particular Pokestops. That means you can most likely find the Pokemon hanging around near the Pokestops. Usually not too far from the icon.
This does not include any Pokemon summoned by a little module. Which will have small pink rings around it when it shows up.
If you aren’t sure where the stop is you can tap on the Pokemon to view it. It will show a top-down viewpoint highlighting the Pokestop with pink footprints. So you can easily make your way to the stop.
Sighted Pokemon are a bit more like the ones we knew before and will be shown for those Pokemon who aren’t found in the proximity of a Pokestops. These Pokemon have a tall grass icon next to them and are still located in a random direction and distance away from you and are sadly still pretty hard to track down.
Rural areas are the best place to hunt Pokemon
Especially in rural areas, they do refresh more often so you could try triangulating in their position by seeing when they vanished in the list and narrow their possible directions down.
If you have a combination of both nearby and sighted Pokemon it likely means that you should look for sighted a Pokemon away from the Pokestops. Otherwise, they would be in the nearby category.
Be aware if they have a combination of both it might not have room to list all Pokemon the area if things get too crowded. of course, it’s important to note that this is still in the testing phase and likely not final.
Pokemon Go Items Guide
When you open your items list the first batch of items you’ll see are potions. These are items that heal your Pokemon’s HP.
- Potions healed 20 HP.
- Super potions heal 50 HP.
- Hyper potions heal 200 HP.
- Max potions heal your HP completely.
To use a potion you just tap on it and it’ll pull up a list of all the Pokemon that you can use the item on.
If the Pokemon’s HP has been reduced to zero that Pokemon has fainted. It has to be revived before you can use a potion. The revive item can use to heal Pokemon with 0 HP.
At level 30 you’ll unlock max revive, which revive a fainted Pokemon and fully restore its HP.
The next set of items that we’re going to talk about are the different type of Poke Balls. You have to use Poke Balls to catch your wild Pokemon.
Standard Poke ball
The first poke ball we’re going to talk about is a standard poke ball you unlock it at level one.
The next poke ball you’re going to be able to use is the great ball which you unlock at level 12 as a higher catch rate than the poke ball.
The Ultra ball is unlocked at level 20. It also has a higher catch rate than a great ball.
The mysterious Master ball is a hundred percent catch rate but we haven’t seen it in the game yet.
Which is available only in Bonus Challenge on Raids.
This helps you catch your Pokemon at a higher rate.
Potions, Revives, Poke Balls, and Razz Berry can all be found by visiting Poke stops. There are some items in the game which you can only get as level up rewards or by buying them from the shop.
Incense is used to attract wild Pokemon to you. It can be used in a few different ways. As long as you’re walking at a rate of 200 meters per minute a Pokemon will appear for every minute that passes. If you stand around, a wild Pokemon will appear after every 5 minutes. The way that you use it, you click on the Poke ball, you go into your items section, you scroll down until you can find the incense you click it and you tap it again and you’re good to go for another 30 minutes.
